    Description

This is a rare advertising matchbook cover promoting the three-day, tour engagement of ANTON SCILBILIA's Broadway "PASSING SHOW" (On Stage) at the Modjeska Theatre in Augusta, Georgia .....
"The Passing Show" began in 1912 (not counting the 1894 musical at New York's Casino Theatre) as an annual Winter Garden Extravaganza which continued through 1924. Produced by the Shubert Brothers (Lee and J. J.), the elaborate productions were designed to compete with Florenz Ziegfeld's popular "Follies" revues which began in 1907.
The Winter Garden "Passing Show" revues starred Willie and Eugene Howard and in various years included among their casts, Charlotte Greenwood, Fred and Adele Astaire, Marilyn Miller, Ed Wynn, De Wolf Hopper, Charles Winninger and Marie Dressler. Among the composers who wrote music for the revues were George Gershwin, Sigmund Romberg, Al Sherman and Herman Finck ..... ANTON SCIBILIA, who produced three Broadway plays or musicals between 1919 and 1927, created his own "PASSING SHOW" and despite never having played in New York, billed it on tour as SCIBILIA'S Broadway "PASSING SHOW"
..... DETAILS: This rare matchbook cover measures approx. 1 1/2" X 4 1/2" inches and includes wonderful graphics on the outside and the venue (Modjeska Theatre, August, Georgia) printed on the inside surface. The matchbook cover has been stored flat for many years ...... CONDITION: With the exception of minor edge wear and the obvious lack of matches, this rare matchbook cover is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
