I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ........ This is a rare January 19th, 1953 program (playbill) from the one-week, Pre-Broadway engagement of the LEONARD BERNSTEIN, BETTY COMDEN and ADOLPH GREEN musical comedy "WONDERFUL TOWN" at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut. (The production would open February 26th, 1953 at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City and run for 559 performances.) ..... The musical starred ROSALIND RUSSELL and featured GEORGE GAYNES, EDITH "Edie" ADAMS, HENRY LASCOE, DORT CLARK, JORDAN BENTLEY, NATHANIEL FREY, DELBERT ANDERSON, DODY GOODMAN and CRIS ALEXANDER. Among the ensemble was JOE LAYTON who would be making his Broadway debut ..... CREDITS: Book by JOSEPH FIELDS and JEROME CHODOROV based on their play "My Sister Eileen"; Music by LEONARD BERNSTEIN ("On the Town", "Wonderful Town", "Candide", "Peter Pan", "West Side Story", "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue"); Lyrics by BETTY COMDEN and ADOLPH GREEN ("On the Town", "Two on the Aisle", "Wonderful Town", "Peter Pan", "Bells Are Ringing", "Say, Darling", "Do Re Mi", "Hallelujah, Baby!", "Fade Out, Fade In", "Subways Are For Sleeping", "Applause", "A Doll's Life", "On the Twentieth Century", "The Will Rogers Follies"); Sets and Costumes designed by RAOUL PENE DU BOIS; Rosalind Russell's Clothes by MAIN BOCHER; Choreographed by DONALD SADDLER; Directed by GEORGE ABBOTT; Produced by ROBERT FRYER ..... DETAILS: The four page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes and list of musical numbers, but no cast photos or bios ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "Lallapalooza", "Let It Come Down" and "Self-Expression" which were cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of several small tears along the the top edge and light creasing from having been folded into quarters, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.Pay me securely with any major credit card through PayPal!
