Pristine (c 1900) USC Brass & Enamel Pin w Trombone Clasp; 2 x 1.25"; 11.42 Gms

$ 44.88

Availability: 88 in stock
  • Condition: Nostalgic and flawless in its antiquity, this Brass and Enamel Pin features a soldered Trombone Clasp. According to Mark Chervenka (of Ruby Lane, see RESEARCH in Item Description below) under the heading DATING BROOCH FASTENERS - 1850 to 1910, "The Push-pull or Trombone catch was patented in Britain in 1850 and was used prior to 1890 in British brooch designs, well before they became popular in the US." USC was founded in 1880, which places this piece in the 1880 - 1910 age range. It is in phenomenal condition. I don't see one single flaw. I did have to clean it: a little Simichrome and a few Q-Tips. The only places where it had accumulated any residue were around the soldered ends of the Trombone Pin. Whereas the body is Brass, the pin (which is impeccably straight) is Rose Brass. The Enamel is perfectly intact, featuring blue in the bow and cheerleader top, and white in the bow and skirt pleats. The piece is a sturdy 2 by 1.25 inches and weighs 11.42 grams. Please see illustrations.

    Editor note: Push-pull or Trombone catches were not referred to as 'safety' clasps until the later part of the 19th century. The Push-pull or Trombone catch was patented in Britain in 1850 and was used prior to 1890 in British brooch designs, well before they became popular in the US.
