    Description

I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York ....... This is a rare broadside (single page playbill) from the out-of-town tryout of the JOSEPH STEIN and STEPHEN SCHWARTZ musical flop "THE BAKER'S WIFE" at the Shubert Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts. (The production opened May 11th, 1976 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in Los Angeles and closed November 13th, 1976 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. canceling the scheduled November 21st, 1976 opening in New York City.) ..... The musical starred TOPOL (who would be replaced by PAUL SORVINO just three weeks before the scheduled Broadway opening) and featured PATTI LuPONE, KURT PETERSON, DAVID ROUNDS, TIMOTHY JEROME, PORTIA NELSON, TERI RALSTON, DARLENE CONLEY, GORDON CONNELL, PIERRE EPSTEIN, TARA LEIGH, JEAN McLAUGHLIN, CYNTHIA PARVA, CHARLES RULE, TONY SHULTZ and KEENE CURTIS ..... CREDITS: Book by JOSEPH STEIN ("Mr. Wonderful", "Take Me Along", "Juno", "Fiddler on the Roof", "The Baker's Wife", "Zorba", "Rags") based on the play and film "La Femme du Boulanger" by MARCEL PAGNOL and JEAN GIONO; Music and Lyrics by STEPHEN SCHWARTZ ("The Magic Show", "Godspell", "Pippin", "The Baker's Wife", "Working", "Rags", "Children of Eden", "Wicked"); Scenery designed by JO MIELZINER (the final set designs from this creative giant who passed away just prior to the Los Angeles opening); Costumes designed by THEONI V. ALDREDGE; Choreographed by ROBERT TUCKER; Directed by JOHN BERRY; Produced by DAVID MERRICK ..... DETAILS: The single page, one-sided playbill measures 7" X 8 1/2" inches and includes full production credits and cast list, but no cast photos or bios ..... CONDITION: With the exception of a vertical fold and light edge wear, this rare broadside is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
