    Description

I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York ....... This is a rare October 19th, 1937 program (playbill) from the Pre-Broadway tryout of the HOWARD DIETZ and ARTHUR SCHWARTZ musical comedy "BETWEEN THE DEVIL" at the Chestnut Street Opera House in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (The production would open December 22nd, 1937 at the Imperial Theatre in New York City and close after only 93 performances.) ..... The musical starred British imports EVELYN LAYE, ADELE DIXON and JACK BUCHANAN and featured LEO G. CARROLL (replaced out-of-town by WILLIAM KENDALL), CHARLES WALTERS, VILMA EBSEN, ERIC BROTHERSON, DORIS PATSTON, RALPH SUMPTER, JACK LATHROP, WARD TALLMAN, ALBERT AMATO and THE DEBONAIRS ..... CREDITS: Book, Music and Lyrics by HOWARD DIETZ and ARTHUR SCHWARTZ ("Three's A Crowd", "The Band Wagon", "Sadie Thompson", "Jennie", "The Gay Life"); Choreographed by ROBERT ALTON; Sets designed by ALBERT JOHNSON; Costumes designed by KIVIETTE; Directed by EDWARD CLARKE LILLEY; Produced by the Messrs. LEE and J. J. SHUBERT ..... DETAILS: The single page, two sided playbill measures 6" X 8 1/2" inches, is printed on a light brown newsprint stock and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes and list of musical numbers, but no cast photos or bios .....
CUT SONG: The list of musical numbers includes "Wand'ring Lover" which was cut out-of-town
