This is a rare oversized four-page advertising herald (flyer) promoting ticket sales for the Original Japanese production of the Sir ELTON JOHN and LEE HALL musical "BILLY ELLIOT" at the Akasaka Act Theatre in Tokyo, Japan and the Umeda Arts Theatre in Osaka. (The production will open July 19th, 2017 in Tokyo and run through October 1st, 2017. The show will transfer to Osaka on October 15th, 2017 and run for three weeks, closing November 4th, 2017.) ..... With music by Sir ELTON JOHN and book and lyrics by LEE HALL (who wrote the film's screenplay), the musical revolves around motherless Billy, who trades boxing gloves for ballet shoes. The story of his personal struggle and fulfillment are balanced against a counter-story of family and community strife caused by the eighties' coal miners' strike in Northern England. Hall's screenplay was inspired in part by A. J. Cronin's novel,The Stars Look Down
, and the musical's opening song is an homage. The 2005 London production was directed by STEPHEN DALDRY and choreographed by PETER DARLING, as was the original film ..... The Japanese producers saw 1346 boys when open casting for the coveted title role was announced in November 2015. By April 2016 there were 450 boys remaining for the creative team to audition before the final seven contenders were selected. Beginning in September 2016, those seven boys went through rigorous ballet, acrobatics, tap dancing, acting and singing lessons before four lucky boys, ranging from 10 to 14 years of age, were selected for the tour .....
