SOLAR BATTERIES
Do you know that the sun's rays have
been used to heat furnaces or to boil
water over many years? Different forms
of reflectors have been used for this pur-
pose. Some of them shaped like a bowl
fire. One of the most intriguing ways of
using the sun's energy is seen in the mod-
ern Solar batteries which are fitted into
space satellites like the one seen here.
When light falls on to a plate of pure
SILICON electrons are set free. The
surface of the plate is treated with:
BORON and an electric current is set up
by the electrons, which is collected by
wires and used to work the instruments
