    This is a rare envelope from New York's Hotel Manger signed by playwright DUBOSE HEYWARD in September 1927 while he was preparing for his first Broadway production, the DOROTHY and DU BOSE HEYWARD Folk Play "PORGY". (The production would open October 10th, 1927 at the Guild Theatre in New York City and run for 367 performances.) ..... The correspondence (not included) was sent to the playwright's mother, JANE S. HEYWARD in Hendersonville, North Carolina and the envelope was postmarked on September 10th, 1927. Based on his 1925
    novel "Porgy", Heyward would collaborate with George Gershwin in 1935 to produce the landmark operatic version of the story, "Porgy and Bess" at New York's Alvin Theatre. His other works include the novels "Peter Ashley" (1932) and "Mamba's Daughters" (1929) starring Ethel Waters, as well as poetry and the screenplay for "The Emperor Jones." His wife Dorothy Heyward (1890-1961) and his mother Jane Screven Heyward (1864-1939) were also authors. DuBose Heyward was one of the organizers of the Poetry Society of South Carolina (incorporated 1920) and was resident dramatist at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston,

It has the logo and address for New York's Hotel Manger on the left side and is postmarked September 10th, 1927, a full month before his play would open at the Guild Theatre ..... CONDITION: The envelope was torn open at the right edge and shows a small amount of paper loss as well was moderate creasing. The signature is bold and clean. This rare item will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
