Parking tokens (circa 1950s to present) are used to regulate parking in lots, or to provide free parking for patrons of businesses. Parking tokens are used in four main ways:
Merchants purchase tokens for parking meters or municipal lots, and give them to their customers for future parking or to exit the lot without fee. This enables downtown merchants to compete with suburban shopping centers that have abundant free parking.
Park free, but a token or cash needed to exit the lot. (Used at banks, hospitals, organizations.)
Token needed to enter lot; free exit. (Used by businesses with employee parking lots.)
Private parking lots - tokens used to operate gates, meters, or prestation to an attendant.
