    Description

I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ........ This is a rare January 1958 "Playgoer" playbill from the Pre-Broadway tryout of the JERRY BOCK and SHELDON HARNICK musical comedy "THE BODY BEAUTIFUL" at the Erlanger Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (The show would open January 23rd, 1958 at the Broadway Theatre in New York City and close after only 60 performances.) ..... This was the first collaboration for the successful songwriting team responsible for the musicals "The Apple Tree", "Tenderloin", "Fiorello!", "Fiddler on the Roof", "The Rothschilds" and "She Loves Me". The musical starred MINDY CARSON and JACK WARDEN and featured STEVE FORREST, LONNIE SATTIN, MARA LYNN, BARBARA McNAIR, WILLIAM HICKEY, ALAN WEEKS, BROCK PETERS, ALBERT POPWELL and CAMILA ASHLAND (whose role was eliminated out-of-town) ..... CREDITS: Book by JOSEPH STEIN and WILL GLICKMAN; Music by JERRY BOCK; Lyrics by SHELDON HARNICK; Sets designed by WILLIAM and JEAN ECKART; Costumes designed by NOEL TAYLOR; Choreographed by HERBERT ROSS; Directed by GEORGE SCHAEFER; Produced by RICHARD KOLLMAR and ALBERT SELDEN ..... DETAILS: The 16 page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and bios of each of the leading actors, but no cast photos ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "Every Man for Himself", "He's Our Boy", "Hidden in my Heart" and "The Manly Art of Self-Defense" which were cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of a light vertical crease, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
