    Description

I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare "Playgoer" playbill (with an original ticket stub) from the Pre-Broadway tryout of the BUD FREEMAN and LEON POBER musical flop "BEG, BORROW or STEAL" at the Erlanger Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (The production would open February 10th, 1960 at the Martin Beck Theatre in New York City and close after only five performances.) ..... The musical starred LARRY PARKS, BETTY GARRETT and EDDIE BRACKEN and featured BIFF McGUIRE, ESTELLE PARSONS, BERNICE MASSI, ROY STUART, RICHARD WOODS, CLAIBORNE CARY, DAVID DOYLE, KAREN SARGENT, BETTY RHODES, HAROLD DA SILVA and JEAN BRUNO ..... CREDITS: Book and Lyrics by BUD FREEMAN from a story by MARVIN SEIGER and BUD FREEMAN; Music by LEON POBER; Sets and Costumes designed by CARTER MORNINGSTAR; Choreographed by PETER HAMILTON; Musical Direction by HAL HIDEY; Directed by DAVID DOYLE; Staged by BILLY MATTHEWS; Produced by EDDIE BRACKEN in association with CARROLL and HARRIS MASTERSON ..... The 16 page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and bios of each of the leading actors, but no cast photos. Includes an original ticket stub from the January 30th, 1960 performance stapled to the top right corner of the title page ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "Love Is No Laughing Matter" and "You Would Like Him" which were cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of the title and date written on the cover, this playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian .....
