This is a rare October 20th, 1959 playbill from the two-night, Pre-Broadway engagement of the NORMAN CORWIN play "THE WORLD OF CARL SANDBURG" at the American Shakespeare Festival Theatre in Stratford, Connecticut. (Following an ambitious tour and summer hiatus, the production opened September 14th, 1960 at Henry Miller's Theatre in New York City and closed after only 29 performances.) ..... Based on the works of CARL SANDBURG, the play starred the legendary BETTE DAVIS and her husband GARY MERRILL and featured CLARK ALLEN ..... In 1959, when they agreed to co-star in the touring stage production of
The World of Carl Sandburg
, the marriage was already rocky, and they divorced the following year on July 6th, 1960. When the production resumed performances, Gary Merrill was replaced with actor LEIF ERICKSON. Neither Davis or Merrill ever re-married. Bette Davis died in 1989, Gary Merrill in 1990. (Reprinted in part from Turner Classic Movies.)
