These types of large brooches/pins were used to secure a sash during the late 1800s early 1900s when the fad of wearing sash over the shoulder and across the chest imitated Queen Victoria. Many brooches of this caliber have very thick pins for holding several layers of fabric. They resemble large buckles and are closed with a C-Clasp closure which is reminiscing of that time. Many of these stunning elaborate ornate brooches are also in the style of art nouveau motifs, florals and such. This is a truly rare piece of turn of the century history!
