Description
The art of micromosaic jewelry dates back to the end of the 18th
century. It became fashionable when the remains of
Pompeii
were discovered in 1748 under the ashes of the 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius, and the first micromosaic jewelry pieces made in
Naples
and
Rome
were miniatures of temple ruins and copies of the frescos found in the villas of
Pompeii
. The glass sticks used for the mosaics came from Murano and were extremely fine and tiny. We visited Murano near
Venice
some years ago and asked if the tiny glass sticks were still to be found as we had some jewelry with bits missing. Unfortunately, the modern glass sticks are at least 3 or 4 times thicker than the old ones. So, the finer a micromosaic is, the older the jewelry! The brooch we offer you here is very fine and very old, we reckon from the Art Nouveau – late Victorian period, around 1900. It has a round domed center with a variety of flowers surrounded by a circle of stars. The outside is decorated with 4 fine arches and 4 round spacers. The brooch is in very good condition for its age with no bits missing. The only flaw we noticed is a tiny golden bead missing on one of the arches and the pin that is a bit bent. It is
1¼" (32 mm)
at the widest point and has a C clasp and is stamped 800 on the back.
Please notice that our pictures of jewelry are enlarged for a better view of the details.
It will ship Priority registered airmail for in
Europe
and anywhere else in the world.
This fantastic little brooch would be a great addition to any collection!
